San Joaquin Yacht Club has been supporting the Meals on Wheels charity for 24 years. The brain child of Jeanie (Pee Wee) Krumlinde in 1988, she saw the need to support the elderly and homebound with meals. Currently chaired by Dennis Pippin. Our members have been generous in opening their wallets to the various fundraising activities; the Champagne Cruise, an idea stemming from Susan Pippin’s recommendation on how to generate additional money for MOW, has proven to be a very successful event. NORMALLY HELD ON THE LAST SUNDAY IN APRIL. This is followed by the Golf/Bowling Tournaments. NORMALLY HELD ON THE THIRD SATURDAY IN MAY. These two activities have been well attended and have proven to be fun for all. A small army of volunteers is recruited to staff all of the events.
THE 2012 CHAMPAGNE CRUISE IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF SUSAN PIPPIN WHO LEFT US AUGUST 3, 2011
The boats for the Champagne Cruise are captained by their owners, who provide all the fuel. Bubbly and munchies are provided for the four-hour excursion. After the cruise, volunteers prepare a nice sit-down dinner complete with dessert.
These events are open to the public who have also been generous with their donations. One cruise participant, who travelled from Fremont to enjoy the cruise, said, “Our family has been to four or five of these cruises, and every year we enjoy the experience more and more. The people are just superior, I can hardly wait till next year.”
Players fly in from Arizona and Iowa, drive in from San Jose, Milpitas, Brentwood, Oakley and Discovery Bay just to be part of the Golf/Bowling Tournaments. A silent and live auction help round out the Tournaments by your augmented donations.
Liz Vargas, County Program Manager for Meals on Wheels, thanks everyone who participates in the events; all the volunteers, boat captains, and Yacht Club personnel. “We who serve meals to the elderly and house-bound in our county. Those people deserve a great deal of credit and without the monies they raise, the service we provide would be drastically curtailed, affecting hundreds of people who need us.”
Initially, the club raised $4,ooo in 1988, which has grown to over $35,000 in recent years. As of the Fall of 2011 …. 219,552 Nutritious Meals have been purchased with our donations …. WOW! |
